Although I know this winery like few others, vineyard by vineyard, I was still surprised to see which and how many MGAs are in its portfolio today (make sure to rotate the first panoramic image carefully as you’ll find a fair few in it). This is testament to the skill, entrepreneurial spirit, and perseverance of a man like Enrico Scavino who, starting with Barolo Bric dël Fiasc, still the winery’s standard-bearer, was able to establish himself as one of the most important figures of his generation (along with Elio Altare and Luciano Sandrone, just to name two examples of producers of the same caliber).
Now that Enrico has left us, everything is in the hands of his daughters Enrica and in particular Elisa, who despite her young age has been involved in full-time production for several vintages already. That is why I like to think (and I’m convinced) that the progressive evolution of the estate Barolo wines towards more nuanced expressions and ever-more reflective of their origins is also thanks to her. Without any shocks or revolutions. Simply by doing.

  • Additional notes
  • First vintage bottled: 1920s.
  • Paolo Scavino was the first producer to use the name Fiasco on a Barolo label with the 1978 vintage of his famous Bric dël Fiasc. He was also the first to use the Bricco Ambrogio MGA name with the 2002 vintage, although it’s worth mentioning that from the same cru the Barolo Riserva Vigneto Bric Sant’Ambrogio from the Lodali winery was already being produced.
  • The Barolo Carobric was a blend made from the Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione, and Fiasco MGAs.
  • The Barolo Riserva Novantesimo is a celebratory label first produced with the 2011 vintage, from the Bricco Ambrogio, Cannubi, Monvigliero, Rocche dell’Annunziata, San Bernardo, and Vignane MGAs. Subsequent vintages will have different blends.
  • All MGAs in which the Paolo Scavino winery either owns or leases vineyards include plots planted with nebbiolo.
