Costabella

Serralunga d'Alba
Costabella

If Fontanafredda, due to its position, is the gateway to Serralunga d’Alba and Carpegna, as I’ve written before, is a source of inspiration to me every time I pass it, the vineyards of Costabella and the two hairpin curves along the slope create a blissful sense that even on cloudy days the sun shines on that amphitheater. But then, with a name like Costabella (“the beautiful slope”, in italian), how could it be otherwise?

Beyond the poetic digression, the best of its vineyards are in the part above the road, and specifically in the first four plots starting from the little woods at the second bend, where the exposure varies little between south and southwest and the wines show a lovely floral expression (less austere than the wines of Carpegna).

As for the geology, excluding a small layer of the Lequio Formation in the lower part, the rest is dominated by younger soils of typical Sant’Agata Fossili Marls.
